Silicone or not?

The great debate!

⁉️ Silicone or Silicone-free⁉️

Interestingly enough, Crunchi uses silicones in some of their makeup products, but proudly flashes the "Silicone-free" badge for their skincare. Why?

Let’s start off with what they are…

✔️ Silicones are derived from silica, which is a naturally occurring compound. Silica is a major component of sand and is commonly found in rocks and minerals. Silicon, extracted from silica, serves as the primary building block for the creation of silicones.

✔️ Although silicones originate from a natural source, they go through a chemical process that modified them to a degree they can no longer be considered natural. This is why we have to be discerning when someone says anything “plant derived” is natural.

🤔 Why put it in any of our products then? It all comes down to function and safety:

FUNCTION

>>>>>>>>>>

The most notable function of silicones is they are occlusive, meaning create a barrier-like coating over the skin. It is resistant to water and air, but breathable, while creating a smooth texture of the product it is in. Sounds like an amazing addition for foundation, right?! 😉

👎🏻 The downside of this in skincare is it doesn’t allow the active ingredients in skincare to penetrate deep, which is exactly what you want your skincare to do.

Silicones in skincare will create a false result (most notably smooth skin) which will wash off the second you wash your face. No long-term benefits.

SAFETY

>>>>>>>>>>

⚛️Not all silicones are created equal. The silicone length or degree of polymerization, chemical groups attached to the silicon atoms, and degree of branching strongly dictate the function and characteristics of the silicone.

🤓Simple forms of silicone-based ingredients (such as Dimethicone, Bis-Stearyl Dimethicone, and Triethoxycaprylylsilane) are utilized in a few Crunchi products. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel compiled all of the available data on these ingredients from over 100 independent studies in a comprehensive, evidence-based report. From this data analysis, they concluded it is unlikely that these silicone-based ingredients are absorbed into the skin due to the large molecular weight of the polymer and they are safe for use in cosmetic products.

🚫Silicone-based ingredients that are crossed with ingredients that do not meet our safety standards (such as Cetyl Triethylmonium Dimethicone Peg-8 Phthalate, Perfluorononyl Dimethicone, Bis-Peg-10 Dimethicone/Dimer Dilinoleate Copolymer) are prohibited from use in Crunchi products.

🌟 In addition, a comprehensive evidence-based review documented in the Ullhman’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry has concluded that dimethicone has no marked harmful effects on organisms in the environment and was concluded not to represent an environmental hazard (think bioaccumulating).

Another safety concern is that silicones are harder to wash off and get stuck in pores, causing irritation and breakouts. It is true that they are

"hydrophobic,” aka, they repel water.

🧼For this reason, silicone-based products don’t rinse away easily. BUT FEAR NOT! A good oil cleanse or double cleanse before keeps your complexion free and clear. Crunchi's I am the Balm and a facial cleansing bars are the perfect solution for that!

Does this clear some things up about silicones? Are you running to check your skincare ingredients label now? 🏃🏻‍♀️
