Apeel… coming to a store near you! 🙃
Have you seen the apeel sticker yet❓
It actually isn’t new but it recently was shared all over FB (with some misinformation) so I wanted to bring it to your attention in case you haven’t heard of it yet or seen it in your stores.
I’ll start by saying I’m the first one to question. I don’t trust anything and I’m always calling out issues with our food, personal & household products.. it’s what I do for a living. But it’s also important to me that what I share isn’t just hearsay or a viral post. I want to do some digging myself, gather accurate information and share it with you so you can be aware and make the best decision for you and your family.
That being said, if you saw a viral post about apeel that included a link/ photo of a safety data sheet.. it’s inaccurate information. The safety data shared is not for this apeel produce coating, but for apeel household cleaner.
Do I have all the answers on this one? No, I wish I did! I honestly don’t think anyone does right now but everyone is uneasy about it. In my digging, it seems like it brings up more questions than answers.
I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts!
*In theory* it sounds like a great solution to food waste but a little too good to be true.
Here’s the gist of it..
🍏Take the remnants of used produce, (peel, seeds, pulp) turn it into a powder, mix a little water and spray on fresh ripe produce to create a protective skin like barrier that keeps oxygen out and moisture in, making your produce last longer and decreasing food waste.
I see their reasoning but I also believe they need to stop messing with our food and let nature be!
🗣️Here’s what I’ve gathered from their website and social media…
•Currently being added to:
*avocados,*english cucumbers,*limes, mandarins, oranges, *organic apples, lemons, grapefruit, mangoes (*North America)
•Apeel is a layer of edible, plant-based coating applied to fresh products that mimics and enhances the natural defences of fruit and vegetables.
•Plant-based protection that helps your produce stay fresh for longer.
•Colorless, odorless, and tasteless on produce.
•Cannot be washed off without damaging produce.
•Used on both Organic & conventional produce
•Created by three post doctoral students in a garage in Santa Barbara.
•Received their first grant by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to perform a small trial in Kenya. (🚩 my spidey senses are tingling)
•The website FAQs says it is one ingredient: purified mono- and diglycerides. NonGMO, not derived from animal sources and is composed of only food grade ingredients made from materials that exist in peels, seeds, and pulp of fruits and vegetables. (🚩What is the sourcing of the leftover scraps? Are they using all Organic NonGMO produce? What’s the quality of the produce? What does their process looks like? What is used to extract the diglycerides? Is produce washed before being sprayed? Any 3rd party testing done? Contamination? Nutritional value effected? Because Apeel’s barrier coating halts the visual decay of fruits and vegetables (an otherwise natural post-harvest occurrence), how will consumers know how long ago the produce was harvested?)
•”Ingredient is so safe it is included in products designed for the most sensitive populations: infants & elderly. Found in products such as Similac and Ensure Enlive Therapeutic Nutrition.”
(🚩Really convincing! Have you seen those ingredient labels?!)
•Apeel is deemed safe by the FDA & WHO (🚩doesn’t mean anything to me).
It raises a lot of questions. Do we really want our produce sitting on ships and trucks for who knows how long before it ends up on our shelves and in our home?

👍🏻👎🏻What are YOUR thoughts❓Will you be eating produce with the Apeel sticker❓
