Foods That Relieve Sinus Symptoms



As spring allergy approaches, learn how your diet may lessen congestion, runny nose, and sinusitis symptoms- not to mention reduce inflammation and sensitivities in your skin.


Above and over-the-counter medications and sinus washes, some foods may help relieve sinusitis or even help prevent it. While some foods significantly reduce, others should be avoided to prevent inflammation and congestion. Refined carbs, baked goods, candy, and sugared soft drinks can worsen sinus pressure AND cause "glycation" or hardening of the collagen and elastin in the skin. Saturated fats like meat, cheese, and dairy cause the thickening of the mucosal linings.


Vitamin C in citrus fruits and some vegetables reduces histamine-the chemical that prompts excessive amounts of inflammation our body produces when fighting hay fever or other allergens. 


Below are six essential nutrients to help with inflammation and allergies, reduce free radical attacks on the skin and boost the immune system.


Beta-carotene seaweed is a great source and appears to decrease inflammation. 


Bromelain-pineapples are good sources of the digestive enzyme bromelain (one of my favorites), which may diminish inflammation and break up mucous to alleviate nasal swelling and other symptoms like congestion.


Vitamin C-Bell peppers and citrus fruits such as oranges contribute vitamin C, another antioxidant that decreases histamine levels.


Quercetin-Blackberries and blueberries contain antioxidants that preliminary research indicates may lessen allergy symptoms by reducing histamine release.


Allium Cepa-The onion family, including garlic and leeks, contains this compound which can reduce allergy symptoms.


Vitamin E-Nuts, seeds, collard greens, spinach, and asparagus reduce histamine and runny nose.


Probiotics-OKAY, THIS IS A MUST for great skin and a healthy gut! Greek yogurts and kefir have probiotics with "good" bacteria. They boost immunity and assist in preventing pathogens from spreading to the sinuses. 


Bottom line? Antioxidants help with allergies and symptoms BUT are substances that help protect the skin's surface from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and environmental aggressors like UV and pollution. Bonus!
